How Clear Messaging Helps Your Practice Get More Referrals

Being excellent at what you do is important. But if people can’t easily explain what you do, they may struggle to refer others to your practice.

In an episode of The Simple Profitable Practice, Julie talks with brand messaging strategist Ryan Holck about simplifying your message, attracting the right clients, and helping happy clients spread the word.

Here are four practical ideas from their conversation.

1. Identify Your Golden Egg

Ryan describes the Golden Egg as the core thing your business does especially well. Many practitioners offer a wide range of services, but listing everything at once can make it difficult for someone to remember what matters most.

Start by asking: What do my favorite clients come to me for? What problem do I solve particularly well? What is the one service I most want to be known for?

You can explain your additional offerings later. First, help people understand your main value.

2. Be Clear About Who You Help

A good client relationship starts with the right fit. You don’t have to work with everyone who contacts you.

Ryan and Julie discuss the importance of serving people you can genuinely help, and recognizing when another professional might be a better fit.

When your message clearly identifies who you help and what they need, the right people can recognize themselves in your work.

3. Make Your Story Easy to Remember

Ryan compares storytelling to Lego blocks. A good story has a few essential pieces that you can expand or shorten depending on the situation.

For a practitioner, those pieces might be who you help, the problem they face, why your work matters, and the kind of support you provide.

Try writing a two-sentence introduction to your practice. Then ask whether someone hearing it for the first time would understand who should contact you.

4. Help Your Clients Know How to Refer You

A client can love working with you and still be unsure how to describe your services to someone else.

Don’t assume people automatically know who would be a good referral. Give them a simple, accurate description of the people you help.

For example: “If you know someone who’s dealing with [specific challenge] and looking for [type of support], I’d be happy to connect.”

The goal isn’t to hand clients a sales script. It’s to make it easier for them to talk about your work in their own words.

Clarity Helps Your Practice Grow

Clear messaging makes it easier for potential clients to understand what you offer and for existing clients to recommend you. You don’t need to explain every credential, service, and detail in your first conversation.

Start with the most important thing. Make it memorable. Then build from there.
