Marketing Made Simple

If marketing your practice feels overwhelming, you're not alone.

You became a practitioner to help people. But growing a practice also means helping the right people discover what you do. And that takes marketing.

The challenge isn't always a lack of ideas. Often, it's that we're trying too many things, switching directions too quickly, or giving up when we don't see immediate results.

In Episode 2 of The Simple Profitable Practice, I share three practical tools to help you simplify your marketing, focus on what matters, and build consistency without feeling like you have to do everything.

1. The Popcorn Method: Give Your Marketing Time to Work

Think about making microwave popcorn.

The kernels need consistent heat before they start popping. If you keep stopping the microwave to check whether it's working, you're interrupting the very process that makes the popcorn pop.

Marketing can work the same way.

Maybe you post consistently for a week, hear nothing, and decide social media doesn't work. So you move on to something else. Then client appointments get busy, and marketing falls off your calendar altogether.

Sound familiar?

The problem might not be the marketing activity itself. It might simply be that you haven't given it enough time or consistency to produce results.

Instead of starting over every time something feels slow, choose a manageable activity and commit to showing up for it.

Ask yourself: What's one marketing activity I can do consistently, even when my schedule gets full?

Sometimes, the most effective thing you can do is give your efforts enough time to work.

2. Balance Fast, Steady, and Slow Marketing

Not every marketing activity produces results on the same timeline. That's why I like thinking about marketing in three speeds.

Fast marketing: Around 30 days

These are activities that can create opportunities relatively quickly. Think reaching out to potential clients, making a clear offer, or following up with someone who has already expressed interest.

Steady marketing: Around 60–90 days

These activities help you build momentum over time. This might include posting consistently on social media, sending newsletters, or encouraging happy clients to leave reviews.

Slow marketing: Around 4–12 months

These are your longer-term investments. Think search engine optimization (SEO), blogging, podcasting, and building professional relationships that can lead to referrals.

None of these approaches is automatically better than the others.

If you only focus on fast marketing, you might constantly feel like you're chasing your next client. But if you only invest in slow marketing, you may not be creating enough opportunities for your practice today.

The goal is to find a balance.

By combining activities that work at different speeds, you're creating opportunities now while building visibility and trust for the future.

And if you're looking for a more personalized approach, my coaching services can help you identify which strategies make the most sense for your practice.

3. Use the Four Quadrant Marketing Tool to Choose What to Do

When everything feels important, it can be hard to know where to begin.

That's where the Four Quadrant Marketing Tool comes in.

This tool helps you look at your marketing across two simple dimensions:

  • Online or in person: Where does the marketing activity happen?

  • Internal or external: Are you connecting with people who already know you, or reaching new people?

From there, you have four areas to consider:

  • Online + Internal: Email your current audience, reconnect with existing contacts, or share helpful resources with people already in your community.

  • Online + External: Share educational content, increase your online visibility, or introduce your work to new audiences.

  • In Person + Internal: Check in with an existing referral partner, reconnect with a past client, or nurture relationships you've already built.

  • In Person + External: Attend a local networking event, meet potential referral partners, or introduce yourself to other professionals in your community.

The beauty of this tool is that it helps you see your options without feeling like you need to do everything.

You don't need a complicated marketing plan to get started.

Instead, try choosing one realistic activity from each quadrant for the month.

Put those activities on your calendar, follow through, and give yourself time to see what works.

The Goal Isn't More Marketing. It's More Consistent Marketing.

You don't have to post on every platform, run ads, start a podcast, and attend every networking event to grow your practice.

And you certainly don't need to do it all at once.

What matters is understanding which activities make sense for your business, how long they may take to work, and how to stay consistent long enough to learn what's effective.

Start simple. Choose a few actions you can realistically maintain. Give them time.

Because growing a profitable practice isn't about doing more marketing. It's about doing the right things consistently.

And when you're ready to take that consistency beyond marketing, The Rainmaker can help you strengthen your sales conversations and build a more sustainable practice.
